They change how your entire digestive system moves, and if nobody prepared you for that, the first few months can feel like your body has been swapped out for someone else's.
Why do GLP-1 medications slow down digestion?

So the fullness after six bites, the way last night's dinner still feels present at breakfast, the general sense that everything moved into the slow lane: that is the medication doing its job. Understanding this changes how you eat on it, which we'll get to.
Why is constipation worse in perimenopause on a GLP-1?
You're getting it from two directions. The medication slows motility from above while shifting hormones, especially declining progesterone and estrogen, are already slowing it from within. And if a dose increase flattens you, that is worth a conversation about pacing. Titration schedules are not a race, and the women who go slower often end up doing better.
Bloating on a GLP-1 is mostly a traffic problem: food and gas hanging around longer in a system that's moving at half speed. It overlaps confusingly with perimenopausal bloating, which is more hormonal and cyclical. A rough way to tell them apart: medication bloating tracks with meals and dose changes, hormonal bloating tracks with your cycle, such as it is these days. Sometimes it's both, which is its own kind of fun.
Does a GLP-1 change your microbiome?
Indirectly, yes. When you eat less food and less fiber, you feed your gut bacteria less, and the community shifts. Early research suggests GLP-1 therapy may nudge the microbiome in favorable directions too, but the biggest microbiome variable on these medications is what stays on your plate.
